The Upstate is not a destination, but it rewards people who slow down for a hour.

Anyone expecting a resort atmosphere will be disappointed here. The sub-$80 properties are highway-adjacent motor inns and midscale chains. They are a good fit for couples on a road trip who want a private tub without paying destination prices. They are not for someone celebrating an anniversary who wants turndown service and a wine list. For that, head to Beaufort or Hilton Head and budget accordingly.
